“What does it mean when the engineers refer to the “temperature split” in a refrigerator?”

Watch the first couple of minutes of the first video in Module 1, unit 7, “Refrigerator Air Distribution Systems”

        Correct.

Yes. So, the start winding is open. What does that mean in terms of the compressor?

            Right.

And we were measuring between the C and S posts on the compressor.

What is it that is open?

“You’re on a service call for a refrigerator and discover that the compressor is not starting. You remove the start relay from the compressor and measure the resistance between the C and S posts on the compressor and read that there is infinite resistance. You therefore conclude:”

              What does “infinite resistance” mean?

and that should make sense to you – the evaporator is absorbing heat from the air in the freezer compartment so that it will be cold in there. The heat goes into the refrigerant which then continues to move through the system.

                  that’s correct

One way I remember this is thinking about the fact that warm air comes out from under my refrigerator – that’s the condenser removing heat from the refrigerant.

So now do you know which words to put in here?

A refrigerant picks up or absorbs heat in the ____ when it ____.

A refrigerant picks up or absorbs heat in the ____ when it ____.

This questions relies on you understanding the basic operations of each components of the refrigeration system.

You can start by reviewing Module 1, unit 2.
We go into more detail in the units after that.

Can you tell me what happens in the:
                      1. Evaporator
                      2. Condenser

You found a typo – thanks! We obviously just meant “frost” and I have fixed that.

If you search around, you’ll see a variety of ways to refer to that drain pan. It is the condensate that is being drained, so that’s our preferred term. But it’s always good to be aware of the variations.

Right – so that’s the first thing you would suspect – the customer caused the problem because of the setting.

Correct. So, if a user sets the control to “freezer coldest,” do you see how that could possibly cause the fresh food compartment not to get enough cold air?

Right. Assuming this is a regular, single-evaporator refrigerator, how does the fresh-food compartment get colder?

                                Hi Richard,

If you look at the quiz results, you’ll see this explanation: “Most of your instruction will come from the course units, but the Kleinert text has some very helpful supplemental material.”

The Kleinert readings aren’t the most important part of the course, but neither do we want students to think they are “optional.” They are helpful.

The Newsletter link shows up in the explanation.

“You get called out on a service call for a complaint that the freezer is cold but the fresh food compartment is warm. Upon your arrival, you notice that the freezer control is set to “freezer coldest.” What is a likely problem in this situation?”

What is the function of the freezer control?
