  • I need to rephrase…

How is 120V measured from L1 (or L2) wrt neutral when there seems to be no visible circuit from the heater to neutral? Is this simply because the heater is grounded to neutral?

Same as if I were to grab hold of L1 or L2, 120V would run through my body to ground?

    Scott…Samurai,

    Thanks for your reply.

I must however be missing something very basic.

The main point of my question is…Where does the 120V come from in this circuit? I can fully understand that L1 thru the heater back to L2 completes the 240V circuit and if either L1 or L2 is missing then 240V will not be present across the heater. But how is there 120V? In my thinking it should read 0V across the heater element. I am missing how the 120V circuit completes from L1 (or L2) back to neutral.

I’m even more confused now by your reply so I guess I do need to discuss further.

My question was more directed toward being able to see and understand on the schematic a path for the 120V being measured at the heater terminals when there is no direct connection to neutral.

    And…Thanks for the reply!

    To be more specific…
I need more help in understanding the following areas:
    – Reading Schematics
    – Reading Timer Charts
    – Understanding Voltage Measurements and Voltage Drops in Circuits
